"There might be a better lead singer/lead guitar player combo in North Texas than Amber Farris and David Ponder, but such a case will not be easily proven. Farris' powerfully soulful voice is the smoke to the flames that leap from Ponder's axe when he really kicks out the jams. Their recent release Jank City Shakedown reminds us that country music can legitimately blow out amps." Read More

"The Dallas quintet deliver a heavy dose of roadhouse rock. Singer Amber Farris has a voice that often recalls Maria McKee and more than holds its own against the band’s brawny electrified sound." read more

  • 11/05/2012 - Daytrotter.com - Sean Moeller

"...The people that Farris, guitarist David Ponder, drummer Nate Wedan, keyboardist Mike Talley and bassist Wade Cofer bring to life are those who have seen the floor, been knocked down to it more times than they can remember and after some bottles have been consumed, they've managed to pick themselves off of those floors, to examine the new shape that they find themselves in. It never seems to be the same shape. It's always something new, slightly more damaged, but reminiscent. Farris is a force as a singer, as a conveyor of hopefulness and of despair..." read more

"...In a time when too many female vocalists are praised for their twang or their sweet drawl, Amber opts for a bluesy bravado that commands more attention.  The music of Somebody's Darling sounds like it might've emerged from a place a state or two to the east..." read more

"The hardest rocking band in the 'Best Country' category this year made the second half of 2012 theirs to own. After releasing the immaculate, blues and groove-inflected Jank City Shakedown, Amber Farris, David Ponder and crew rocked the East Coast for a month while Dallas savored their welcome return." read more

  • 10/23/2012 - Preston Jones - dfw.com

"Farris anchors the proudly messy blend of rock and country with her singular pipes, but her bandmates are air-tight behind her, deploying keys, bass and drums to create a roiling rhythm section that makes tracks like Wedding Clothes or Back to the Bottle rip out of the speakers like a wild night on the town..." read more

"The album (Jank City Shakedown)bristles with authentic country as well as some rhythm and blues, strutting from opening cut "Cold Hands" to closer "The Middle." It's easily one of the best local releases of the year and should bring the band the national exposure it so richly deserves..." read more

"Still, even with all that's going on in this ridiculously packed weekend, another show has helped put a favorite local country act atop this week's list of buzzing acts. After a month-long tour -- and over a month since their sophomore full-length was released -- Somebody's Darling returns to town this Saturday to play its homecoming/album release show at Dada. Aside from our own coverage of the long-time-coming album, the adored country act received feature articles in pretty much every major publication this week. And, not surprisingly, they were revealed as nominees in the "Best Country Act" category in this year'sDallas Observer Music Awards." read more

" There is a soulful keyboard, guitar, bass and drums outro on “Maybe” that speaks volumes about the band’s sound, particularly on the new disc Jank City Shakedown. Add to that Amber’s heart-on-the-sleeve voice and you have the makings of roots rock-R&B-country nirvana." read more

Somebody's Darling's self-titled debut will feature many of the (great) songs that appeared on last year's teaser EP, plus some delicious new concoctions. ...not only can Farris shout it out like an alt-country Aretha Franklin, but guitarist David Ponder isn't exactly a slouch in the songwriting department, either. Together, the two, along with a tight rhythm section, merge old-school honky-tonk with pop and soul. It's a mixture that always seems to translate well whenever Somebody's Darling hits the stage. read more.

...like if Janis Joplin hopped on the microphone during an Old 97's and Slobberbone show... Somebody's Darling has been together for only a little over a year, and yet, in that time, the quartet has built up a sizeable fan base, released a well-received EP and won a contest (Shiner Records' Rising Star Competition) that sent the band to Nashville to record its full-length debut. read more.

  • 09/25/08 - Darryl Smyers - Dallas Observer

Mixing the chugging rhythm section of Old 97's with a bluesy, almost Patsy Cline vibe, the music of Somebody's Darling is slick when it wants to be and hard-charging when it counts. While some bands might shy away from a conventional power ballad like "Easy," Farris and crew invest the song with just the right amount of hayseed swagger, creating a tension that's both dynamic and attentive. And when muscle is called for (thanks to guitarist David Ponder), songs like "Farewell" and "Hearts Too Young" deliver in spades. Throughout all five cuts on this impressive EP, Somebody's Darling performs with a confidence and playfulness that speaks well for any full-length effort that should be in the band's future. Music this tuneful and self-assured warrants a speedy encore." read more.

  • 09/11/08 - Hunter Hauk - DFW Quick Print Edition

Dallas band Somebody’s Darling got something a lot better than free beer when it won Shiner Records’ Rising Star competition last October. Weeks after beating out 23 other bands in the contest, the country-rock foursome found itself in a Nashville recording studio, making an album on Shiner’s dime with producer Dan Baird (of Georgia Satellites). Guitarist David Ponder says those sessions resulted in a self-titled album that captures the band’s live sound much better than last year’s debut EP. “On every song on the record — drums, bass, acoustic guitar, one electric track and most of the vocals are all live,” Ponder told us in an e-mail interview. “We can definitely hear the difference."

This release is a very impressive debut for this barely one-year-old band. Amber’s towering vocal spreads through the opening track and doesn’t quit until the last note on “Here We Go.”(…)Amber Farris just might turn out to be the female version of Rhett Miller and the band might be the next Old 97’s. Somebody’s Darling is breath of fresh air in this day and age of wannabe alt-country bands that seem to form every four hours in Texas.
